How Spiritual Warfare Exposes The Cracks in Your Foundation.

You keep telling God you are not one of His strongest soldiers, trust me, we all can tell. It’s actually very obvious. But, I promise I am not harsh, I am actually speaking to myself too. So bear with me, hold my hand, let’s walk through this together.

Spiritual warfare, what exactly is it?

It is the constant battle between the forces of evil, and the children of God. A battle that sometimes is hard to put a finger on, a battle that is unseen.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”- Ephesians 6:12.

Why is it that I am praying, reading my Bible, fasting, going to church, doing what I am supposed to do, yet still God, there is this one thing? That when everything just seemed to be going well, a loved on had to fall ill, you had to lose your job, you failed a pivotal class, you’re struggling with something you haven’t struggled with in a while? God, why is it that every step forward seems to come with a setback?

Please God! We are all tired of it!

Well, let’s all take a deep breath in… and out. Hold my hand tighter and let me tell you this; spiritual warfare is actually very necessary. In fact, as a Christian… uh, yea, just expect it.

Once we are able to switch our stance from a, “woe is me”, mentality, to a posture of awareness, preparedness, and boldness, the battle becomes less frightening.

“Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”- Ephesians 6: 11.

Let’s take another breath. Let me tell you why spiritual warfare is necessary (this is not undermining the fact that it still hurts and is painful to experience. Comfort and understanding are still needed in these times).

It serves as a reality check :

I have come to realize that many believers actually overlook the presence of the enemy in this life. That whenever something bad happens, they are quick to point a finger at God, and channel all of their anger towards Him. But hellooo, Satan is very real! Failure to recognize his schemes and tactics makes one susceptible to falling victim of his traps. Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed from a lack of knowledge”.

Believer to believer, let’s not pretend satan does not exist (of course, our focus should never soley be on him, but let us not be ignorant. Ignorance is not bliss in this occasion). “Be sober- minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8.

His aim is to steal, kill, and destroy. He doesn’t even care if you serve him or not, just as long as he can get you to not serve God. He will do anything to try and seperate you from God.

One of his favorite ways is through the mind. Mind attacks are very prevalant amongst believers. The enemy will attempt to plant seeds of fear, worry, and lies in your head. He will try to kill your trust in God, build a wall of pain and resentment around your heart, lead you astray, and blind you with distractions. All aiming to have you believe God less, and the devil more.

This warfare is a wake-up call. WE DO NOT WRESTLE AGAINST FLESH AND BLOOD. Stay vigilant.

It exposes how shaky your foundation is:

(Why is it so easy to get you to compromise?)

Your foundation is suspicously shaky, are you sure it is built on solid ground? Why is it that every storm that comes, every wind that blows, we lose you? Every shaking that occurs, you run further and further away from God. Every setback you take, you seem to never take another step forward, every fall you endure, you seem to never get back up. Your house is not built on the solid rock, it is built on sand. You will be swept away if you are not careful. Life is filled with ups and downs, will you continue to follow the unstable patterns of life, or begin to build your house on solid ground?

Your loyalty is shifty.

When times get tough, you are quick to run to something, or someone else. Spiritual warfare brings your idols into the light, they become exposed. When you become stressed, worried, anxious, you run to your vices. Drugs, sex, relationships, you name it. All of these things you use to distract yourself in times of war. Why is it so easy to get you to compromise? All the enemy needs to do is wave lust in your face, and you’re running like a dog. You say God is your everything right? That you would never turn your back on Him. Well, spiritual warfare will test and see how true your statement holds.

(You don’t really trust God, stop lying to yourself)

When the attack comes, the plan fails, who do you run to first for help? No, that is your default answer, actually think about it. Let me guess, you’re still saying God right? Then why is it that when spiritual warfare occurs, you immediately start to panic, you start to plan, you stress about what you can do, and what your next step is. How you are going to fix the situation. Do you notice it yet? The common factor? Your trust is in someone else, that someone is you.

Instead of first going to God in prayer about the situation, you look to yourself. You are your own savior, you write your own story, your will be done, not His. The Bible tells us to lean not to our own understandings, that we should acknowledge God in all of our ways. Yet still, when you failed that class, when the sadness kicked back in, when you lost that opportunity, God didn’t hear from you for weeks. You went back to the place where your trust is actually placed… yourself.

You don’t really trust God, stop lying to yourself. You don’t really think He will save you from that situation, you don’t really think He will turn things around. You look to yourself to figure things out.

You thought your trust in God was solid didn’t you? We all do. Until the bills are piling up, until the medical report returns, until your heart gets shattered.

Spiritual warfare exposes where your faith truly lies.

And lastly,

It builds character:

This one is sometimes one of the more tougher pills to swallow, I know. Hear me out. Spiritual warfare creates a space where mindsets are tested, trust is required, and perserverance is mandatory. If handled well, you will come out a much stronger vessel than before.

Spiritual warfare takes all confidence from you, and places full trust in God. It essentially gets you running back to God once it exposes how incapable and weak we are on our own. It warrants a strong reliance on God. It is in this place that the verse, “not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6), really comes to light. In our weakness, God is made strong.

It also develops us by helping us to build resilience, boldness, authority, and perseverance. Making it out of that warfare moves us from a place of spirtual infancy to a place of spiritual maturity. We also recognize that God has truly given us boldness and authority to go to war and actually make it out.

Our character is built when we also learn to follow God in these tough times, rather than following our own fleshly desires. Soon making us unshakeable in the face of any trial. We also become more spiritually aware. Being able to easily recognize the schemes and traps of the enemy when he attacks. (Resist the devil, and he will flee from you- James 4:7). We will increase in discernment and Godly wisdom therfeore, becoming less succeptible to temptations.
